  Objectives: After completing this course, participants should be able to: • Identify common causes of loss and grief • Identify the traditionally understood stages of grief and what they mean for real life • Recall how significant life losses other than death contribute to a sense of grief • Identify clinical skills that allow for connection and building a therapeutic bond to facilitate coping with grief • Describe the functional impact of grief and loss, as a means of strengthening your clinical skills in working with grieving adults and older adults
  Description: This course outlines common symptoms experienced by grieving clients, and identifies issues aside from death that can contribute to both loss and grief. The goal is to provide a general understanding of the process of grief, how losses impact life, and how people cope with both. It will review the stages of grief and help clinicians distinguish between grief and depression. A focus on empathy and returning to the basic skills of listening and building rapport underline the techniques and considerations of working with a grieving client. Suggestions for supporting a healthy grief process, as well as understanding the uniqueness of grief and individual experiences, are emphasized.
