  Description: This course explores crisis de-escalation and intervention when working with the aggressive patient. Key terms are defined and explained, including crisis, crisis intervention, de-escalation, agitation, and aggression. The eight core actions of Psychological First Aid (PFA) are described to manage the patient’s immediate crisis needs. Psychological and physical factors which may lead to aggressive behavior are explored, with a focus on conditions for each which could lead to aggression. Objectives for staff working with an agitated patient are reviewed, with practices to establish within the organization to support staff’s ability to work with the aggressive patient. Finally, the ten domains of de-escalation are explained to lead staff in a successful intervention.
