  Objectives: After completing this course, participants should be able to: • Identify at least five medications used to treat mood and thought disorders, such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. • Recognize the therapeutic effects and the side effects associated with medications in each category. • Identify at least five medications for treating mood and thought disorders, and describe the benefits of those medications. • Recognize the difference between first and second generation antidepressants and the benefits and deficits of each. • Recognize the potentially life-threatening side effects of Lithium and Lithium-like medications. • Describe the “off-label” use of antidepressants to treat anxiety symptoms.
  Description: This course presents an overview of psychiatric medications used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. These medications are also referred to as psychotropic medications. We will cover categories of medication, therapeutic effects, side effects, precautions, and some of the issues associated with adherence to medication treatment. Module 1 focuses on medications for mood and thought disorders, such as major depression, dysthymic disorder, situational depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, anxiety, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
