  Objectives: After completing this course, learners should be able to: • Recognize patterns of substance use unique to women from initiation to treatment. • List physiological effects of substance use unique to women. • Differentiate between screening and assessment and identify issues unique to women in each process. • Identify obstacles for women and challenges in engaging in treatment services (including treatment engagement, placement, and planning). • Identify factors that influence treatment retention and identify women’s issues and needs during treatment.
  Description: Differences between men and women regarding the physical effects of substance use and the specific issues related to substance use disorders have an impact on treatment. The primary goal of this course is to assist substance misuse treatment providers in offering effective, up-to-date treatment to adult women. When women’s specific needs are addressed from the outset, improved treatment engagement, retention, and outcomes are the result. This course summarizes Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 51 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The information presented here is grounded in women’s experiences, built on women’s strengths, and based on best, promising, or research-based practices.
