After completing this course, learners should be able to:
• Identify the difference between suicide thoughts and behaviors
• Recognize warning signs and risk factors for suicidal behavior
• Apply the GATE process for addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors in substance misuse treatment to clients
Description:
This course is targeted toward substance misuse counselors. It presents the “what” and “why” of working with clients with substance use disorders who have suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors. It also includes background information on suicide and substance misuse disorders as well as a four-step process for addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This course uses Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 50 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a main reference. The recommendations in this course come directly from SAMHSA.
