Description: Co-occurring substance use and mental disorders are not simply a cluster of symptoms resulting from one disorder, but the complex interaction of both. People with mental health disorders are more likely than people without mental health disorders to experience an alcohol or substance use disorder. Co-occurring disorders can make an accurate mental illness diagnosis more challenging because substance misuse can mimic or create mental health issues. In many cases, patients receive treatment for one disorder while the other disorder remains untreated, which adversely affects treatment outcomes. Also, both mental and substance use disorders can have overlapping biological, psychological, and social components. Inadequate provider training or screening, and an overlap of symptoms, may mean that other health issues may be addressed and mental health and substance use missed. The consequences of undiagnosed, untreated, or undertreated co-occurring disorders can lead to a higher likelihood of experiencing homelessness, incarceration, medical illnesses, suicide, or even early death. This training will explore co-occurring considerations and best practices, define addiction and severity according to the DSM-5, examine promising assessment tools, and assist clinicians to identify and treat co-occurring disordered clients more effectively. Content Level: Intermediate Keywords: Substance misuse, co-occurring disorder, COD, dual-diagnosis, alcohol, cannabis, marijuana, stimulant, opioid, opiate, homeless, veteran, motivational interviewing
