Description: Brief interventions have been found to be effective in facilitating change in a number of health behaviors, especially in the areas of alcohol, tobacco and drug use. Settings for which they are recommended include a variety of medical settings, such as primary care practices, hospitals, emergency rooms, university clinics and the general population of individuals who may be concerned about their substance use (accessed via web-based programs). Further, research has found that brief interventions may be as effective as extended treatment in behavioral health outpatient treatment settings and may enhance outcomes if used at the outset of treatment in all behavioral health settings. Brief interventions that include the components of Motivational Enhancement Therapy – motivational interviewing and personalized normative feedback – appear to be the most successful forms. This course provides an introduction to brief interventions, personalized normative feedback and models of Motivational Enhancement Therapy.
