Description:
This course will introduce you to a somatic-based approach to treating individuals with PTSD and/or trauma-related symptoms – Somatic Experiencing and its condensed form, the Trauma Resiliency Model. These approaches do not currently have the research support that would make them evidence-based, but the ideas and potential utility are interesting and potentially helpful. PTSD and trauma-related symptoms are explained as failures in the somatic completion of the body’s instinctual response to threat. It is as thought an individual “gets stuck” in an immobile, yet activated state when the traumatic event is overwhelming and the fight or flight response cannot be completed. The therapeutic task is to help the individual complete the threat response and the discharge the bound up energy.
