Objectives: At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: • Define at least 4 different ways they could use the Internet in providing services to clients. • Describe at least 3 research findings about web-based therapy. • Identify sources of ethics guidelines for web-based or Internet therapy. • Describe at least three areas of concern for which education is needed in providing online therapy or services.
Description: This course will introduce you to several of the multitude of possibilities for using the Internet in providing behavioral health services. Possibilities include providing therapy online, either through “real-time” chat, instant messaging, audio or video conferencing or avatar therapy in a virtual world such as Second Life; through email or asynchronous (not “real-time”) communication; or through online structured programs for particular problems, such as anxiety, depression, or stress. A wide range of support groups and supportive connections are possible as well as extensive educational opportunities. After looking at what one can “do” online with and for behavioral health customers, we will also explore its credibility – research, guidelines, knowledge needed, certifications and payment.
