  Objectives: At the completion of this course, participants will be able to: • Define aspects of relationships in a woman’s life that contribute to and/or require consideration in evaluating a woman’s substance use and treatment needs • Define psychological patterns in a woman’s life that contribute to and/or require consideration in evaluating a woman’s substance use and treatment needs • Define sociocultural patterns, especially as it relates to work, in a woman’s life that contribute to and/or require consideration in evaluating a woman’s substance use and treatment needs • Define specific patterns in same sex and mixed sex groups that may be important in determining program design so that women and men benefit from their group experiences • Define additional questions and/or screening tools to use in evaluating the needs of women in treatment.
  Description: The goal of this course is to summarize critical areas of concern in assessing and treating substance abusing or dependent women. These include relationships, biological, psychological (including trauma), and socioeconomic issues. We summarize research findings presented in CSAT’s TIP 51, Substance Abuse Treatment: Addressing the Specific Needs of Women, as well as findings from other sources – and, then, we review implications of some of these findings for assessing women to identify needs and for providing services to meet those needs. Throughout, we attempt to maintain a gender competent awareness.
