Description: The goal of this two part series on Performance Improvement is to emphasize the value of being systematic in your approaches to improving performance. Too often, behavioral health organizations have not achieved the level of sophistication of other kinds of healthcare organizations in their choice of measures to determine the performance of critical processes, data collection strategies, data analysis, ways to find root causes or process failure points, change strategies and change maintenance. In Part 1 of this series, we explored the value of being systematic, orderly and organized in one’s data collection processes and started examining the common basic steps in most systematic performance improvement approaches – looking at the design of a process, measurement of its performance and analysis of data for finding problems and for identifying root causes. In Part 2 of this series, we will look at improvement approaches and change management processes, used to sustain process improvements. Historically, the performance improvement focus has been on achieving performance. But many find that individuals slip back into old processes if the change process itself has not been addressed systematically.
