Objectives:
At the completion of this program, participants should be able to: • Understand the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder should ONLY be given to a youth who meets DSM-IV criterion for the diagnosis • Identify the factors to screen for in assessing youth for a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis • Know the assessments available for use with youth with Bipolar Disorder • Understand the importance of including family members in the treatment process – either as informants of the youth’s symptoms, for their own needs, or through family counseling • Know there is limited information available for preventative efforts but that this does not mean it is not possible to reduce the risk of a youth developing a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis

Description:
This course reviews the AACAP’s Practice Parameter for the Assessment & Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Bipolar Disorder as well as more recent research in order to help clinicians become better skilled at screening and assessing for Bipolar Disorder among youth. This is a one hour course and targets mental health counselors, case managers, social workers, and other social service professionals in the child services and related fields.
