Training Title:
Retired ~ Understanding DSM-5 Part 3 Personality Disorders

Clock Hours: 1

Objectives:
At the completion of this program, participants should be able to: • Discuss the new approach to Personality Disorders in the DSM-5 • Recognize two key criteria for diagnosing personality disorder in the DSM-5 • Appreciate why a clinician should defer the diagnosis of personality disorder for as long as possible

Description:
In this program on the DSM-5, our speakers discuss the details and implications for practice of this new guideline which is going to change the way we view, diagnose and treat mental illness. Changes to the Personality Disorders section of DSM-5 have been a particular target for criticism. This is particularly distressing because personality disorders are frequently acknowledged to be the largest and fastest growing mental health issue. Few clinicians are trained to identify, assess and intervene is cases that involve personality disorders. Plus, these disorders are almost always the driving force behind stalled treatment. Clients are often referred to as confusing, resistant, unmanageable, difficult, stressful, and high risk, causing high levels of stress and frustration for their therapists. Prior to the DSM-5, personality disorders were coded on Axis II. But now the DSM-5 has done away with the use of “axes” for diagnostic coding, and the good news is there is a new conceptualization of personality disorders away from undesirable or negative personality features and towards a conceptualization of personality disorder as an impairment in both self organization and interpersonal relating.
