At the completion of this program, participants should be able to: • Identify the three phases of treatment for youth with Major Depressive Disorder and the three components of each phase • Know there are specific laws in each state regulating confidentiality and parent involvement in mental health services for youth • Identify the six possible outcomes in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder • Know the five main factors which place youth at a heightened risk for developing Major Depressive Disorder and at an elevated need for preventative programming • Understand the importance of gathering enough information to make a full 5-axis diagnosis for youth with Major Depressive Disorder

This course utilizes a case study as it reviews the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’s Practice Parameter for Depressive Disorders among Children and Adolescents as well as more recent research on the topics of confidentiality, screening, treatment phases and components, and prevention of Major Depressive Disorder in child and adolescent populations in order to help clinicians become better skilled at screening for and treating youth with Major Depressive Disorder as well as identifying youth at-risk of developing the disorder. This is a one hour course and targets case managers, social workers and other social service professionals in the child services and related fields.
