At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: • Comprehend how to use a person-centered approach to career exploration. • Describe methods for developing academic and job-related skills. • Describe the basic steps for pursuing postsecondary education and acquiring academic accommodations. • Recall ways to help individuals prepare for employment, search for jobs, and practice interviewing. • Identify different possible job accommodations and the basic steps involved in arranging for them.

As Direct Support Professionals, the educational and career supports you provide help individuals with disabilities develop academic skills, job skills, and life skills that they can use to maximize their potential and achieve greater autonomy. This course presents a person-centered approach to career exploration which works to match one’s strengths and abilities to jobs that meet their interests. Methods for developing academic and job-related skills and the steps involved in pursuing postsecondary education are explored. As a DSP, you will learn how to support individuals to prepare for employment, search for jobs, and practice the interview process. Lastly, different job accommodations that help individuals with disabilities complete their job duties and how to arrange for them are identified.
