Training Title:
Crisis Intervention Teams: Working Effectively with Law Enforcement v.2

Clock Hours: 1

Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: • Identify important elements of interdisciplinary collaboration between law enforcement and mental health with regard to crisis intervention • Identify the types of CIT models • Identify the role(s) of both mental health professionals and law enforcement officers in CIT models • Identify outcomes of CIT application in a variety of factors • Recognize potential opportunities to expand collaboration between mental health and law enforcement

Description:
This course will introduce the concepts of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) programs and their role of connecting the mental health and law enforcement fields. Mental health and law enforcement form a paradox in that they are two separate disciplines united with many commonalities. Each discipline requires a skill set unique to the needs of the field. Fundamentally, both fields focus their service delivery on the safety and well-being of the people in their communities. Despite extensive training to enforce safety using diverse interventions, law enforcement officers do not receive formal clinical training to administer when responding to individuals with mental illness. Similarly, mental health professionals do not receive adequate training to enforce community safety during occasions when individuals pose threat to self or others. Therefore, the collaboration of both disciplines to best serve the needs of individuals with mental illness is apparent. Keywords: Police, crisis, critical incident, law enforcement, mentally ill, intervention
