Training Title:
Retired ~ Intimidation in the Healthcare Work Place

Clock Hours: 1

Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: • Describe examples of intimidating and/or disruptive staff behavior • Identify factors that may trigger intimidating or disruptive staff behavior • Identify the components of a comprehensive code of conduct for an organization • Specify the key actions that leaders must take to implement a comprehensive approach to handling disruptive staff behavior • Describe a least two differences between the approach to error management taken by “high reliability organizations” compared to more traditional healthcare organizations.

Description:
Efforts to reduce the incidence of performance errors and improve patient safety in the healthcare environment have focused on redesigning work processes. However, errors continue to occur at significant rates. More recently, those in the safety field are realizing that the culture of the healthcare environment needs to change so that reducing and/or controlling errors becomes a major value and focus. Thus, organizations are being required to assess and develop a culture of safety. One of the key contributors to a culture in which errors are ignored, avoided or “worked around” is the worker who is intimidating or disruptive; thus, making it unsafe for staff to voice opinions or concerns regarding a patient’s care. The goal of this course is to introduce you to some of the concerns about and approaches for dealing with health care workers who engage in intimidating or disruptive behavior. Keywords: article, culture of safety, intimidation, disruptive staff behavior, workplace violence, safety, Joint Commission, code of conduct, communication, collaboration, team, teamwork, Skypek
