Retired ~ Evidence-Based Practices for Treating Individuals Experiencing Trauma and/or PTSD - Part 1

Clock Hours: 2

Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants should be able to: • Define the criteria for naming a therapy practice a well-established evidence-based practice. • Define at least one reason for using evidence-based practices • Identify common symptoms or responses to extreme trauma • Identify the criteria for diagnosing a person with PTSD. • Describe the population with whom the two evidence-based practices reviewed, Seeking Safety and TF-CBT, should be used • Identify at least three critical aspects of the structure of these two evidence-based practices reviewed • Define fidelity of practice.

Description:
Certain evidence-based practices for treating individuals, adults and children, with trauma-related symptoms and/or PTSD have been identified and have been found to produce reliable improvements in symptomatology as well as in various aspects of quality of life. In this Part 1 of a two-part series, we review the criteria for determining that a therapy approach is evidence-based and how to find evidence-based practices. We then look at definitions of severe trauma, trauma-related symptoms, PTSD and trauma-related care. And, then we briefly examine two evidence-based practices for working with people with PTSD. Seeking Safety was designed for individuals with PTSD and substance use disorders and has been found to be effective with individuals with one or both of those diagnoses. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) has been widely researched for use with children who are having disruptive symptoms in response to traumatic events and their parents.
