Objectives: At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:
• Define the prevalence rates of physical illness among individuals with mental illness
• Understand that physical illnesses are often missed in those with mental illness
• Understand that physical illnesses can cause some of the psychiatric symptoms that individuals present with
• Define health-related lifestyle risks in people with mental illness
• Identify lifestyle factors that may contribute to both physical and mental health
• Identify strategies for reducing the health-related lifestyle risks in people with mental illnesses.
Description: This course will explore the issues of health-related lifestyle and physical health in individuals with mental illnesses. Both physical illnesses and health-related lifestyle risks, such as obesity, poor exercise, insomnia, smoking and more, occur at higher rates among those with mental illness, yet they too often go unrecognized and/or unaddressed. People with mental illness, just like those without mental illness, can be taught the importance of lifestyle in physical health and well-being and, with the proper supports, just like for those without mental illness, will make changes in relevant behavior. We also examine the role of certain factors, such as omega-3 fatty acids, Mediterranean Diet, carbohydrate cravings, exercise, exercise intensity and sleep on both physical health and mental health.
