Training Title:
Trauma-Informed Care, Part 1: The Case for Trauma-Informed Care

Clock Hours: 1.5

Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to: • Define rates of occurrence of PTSD in different populations of individuals served in behavioral healthcare organizations • Identify performance improvement measures might be use in organizations to determine the rate of trauma, possible PTSD or trauma-related symptoms and actual treatment delivered for PTSD or trauma-related symptoms in their organizations • List examples of behavior by providers and systems of care that may be disempowering, devaluing and/or retraumatizing.

Description:
The knowledge that trauma is a significant, even a core causative, factor associated with the full range of behavioral health conditions has been around for many years. This is the first of a two part series on a trauma-informed care approach to PTSD. Part 1 defines what trauma-informed care is, and reviews research that justifies a change from the more traditional medical and psychological model. A simple way to frame the difference between trauma-informed care and our more traditional medical and psychological models of care is to consider the starting question implied by each. In the traditional models, we ask “What is wrong with you?” In the trauma-informed care model, we ask “What happened to you?” It’s clear that your approach to the individual seeking services will be quite different depending on the perspective you start with. Keywords: Trauma, abuse, neglect, harm, injury, trauma-informed care, care, PTSD, dissociative, acute stress, DSM, Post- traumatic stress disorder, addictions, substance abuse, mental health, behavioral health, Skypek
