Training Title:
Bullying in Children and Adolescents

Clock Hours: 1.5

Objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to • Define bullying • Identify roles of participants in bullying • Identify who gets bullied most often • Identify various patterns of bullies and bullying • Identify the impact of bullying on bullies and victims • Identify factors contributing to bullying • Identify characteristics of successful interventions in school bullying

Description:
This course examines several aspects of ‘bullying’: definitions, explanations for its development, consequences to both bullies and victims and possible interventions. With the media coverage of several fairly recent suicides in response to bullying, the interest in bullying and intervening in its occurrence has grown. Interestingly, that interest has skyrocketed in the last decade. There were fewer than 190 peer-reviewed articles published on bullying during the 20-year span from1980 to 2000. However, there were well over 600 articles published on this topic from 2000 through 2010. The design of intervention strategies may be most effective if based on an understanding of the range of factors contributing to bully development. Keywords: Bullying, bullies, bully-victims, victims, aggression, violence, LGBT, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, questioning, interventions, bystanders, sexual minority, gender, gender competence, Skypek
