Training Title:
Asperger’s Syndrome: Group Treatment

Clock Hours: 1

Objectives:
After completing this course, participants should be able to: • Differentiate between autism, Asperger’s, and social anxiety. • Understand “Theory of Mind” as it exists in Asperger’s. • Distinguish why group therapy is often the treatment of choice for Asperger’s kids.

Description:
Our speaker, Geoff Magnus, LCSW, MSSW, Ph.D., Psychiatry, takes a positive approach to his work with latency and teenagers diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. He has found that because of an early lack of social information, the kids he works with can easily get overstimulated and overexcited. Because facial information is not particularly meaningful to them, they have trouble recognizing the feelings of others. Even so, relationships are very important to kids with Asperger's. Their high level of motivation to interact with each other is the basis of Dr. Magnus' group treatment. By putting kids in a group together with very little intervention, he has seen amazing results.
